Family Volunteer Day-Insect Survey
Sat, April 26, 2025
Help our wildlife managers monitor arthropod abundance and diversity in our grassland ecosystems.
Apply in our online Volunteer Management System.
Contribute photos and data as part of an ongoing arthropod survey which occurs each spring at Government Canyon. Walk a set route in a grassland and document all arthropods seen along the way.
Previous experience is not necessary. You will need to have the free iNaturalist app downloaded on a fully-charged smartphone before you arrive. It is extremely helpful if you have already familiarized yourself with how iNat works, but we can coach you if you have trouble with the app.
Volunteers may expect the following:
- Work outside for up to 2 hours in full sun, standing in tall vegetation.
- Hike over unpaved, rocky trails (distance varies).
- Stoop, reach, grasp, and bend to take photos and move through vegetation.
Minimum Age: 5 years
Please note: If this is your first time signing up to volunteer, approval is dependent on a clear background check for family members over 18 years. Children under the age of 13 cannot apply for online accounts in our system. A staff member will contact you after you register to get the full count of family members who will participate and provide additional what to bring/where to meet details. Youth 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
Government Canyon SNA appreciates the efforts of anyone who wants to share their time as a volunteer. If ADA assistance is required, please request modifications using this form, or email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.
