Start the new year with a leisurely hike at Government Canyon State Natural Area with the Friends of Government Canyon.

We’ll hike the historic Joe Johnston Route from its trailhead to the turn-off for Wildcat Canyon Trail and return the same way. This hike is about 2 miles long and will have some slight elevation change with fairly rocky conditions. Open to ages 6 years and up; no strollers please; no pets please. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.

Meet at the Rainwater Harvesting Tower at the Visitor Center. Dress for hiking outdoors; sunscreen and hat recommended. Wear sturdy footwear appropriate for rough trails; bring two (2) liters of water PER PERSON, lunch, and a snack if you like. Open to the first 15 who check in at the Visitor Center between 9-9:15 a.m.

Plan to arrive early as mornings can be very busy. The Natural Area’s front gates open at 7AM; plan to check in and be ready to go no later than 9:15 a.m. The hike starts promptly at 9:30 a.m.

Though the activity is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. We often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass. Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot for you on the hike! The hike is limited to the first 15 participants to check-in with the hike leader.

This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check trail conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or go to the GCSNA webpage, Instagram, or Facebook.
