First Day Hike: Family-Friendly Morning Hike
Thu, January 01, 2026
Start your kids' new year on the right foot enjoying the outdoors at Government Canyon State Natural Area!
Join dedicated volunteers on a FUN and leisurely family-friendly hike on the Savannah Loop trail. Participants will learn about nature, wildlife, native plants, and whatever else the kiddos find along the way!
Activity distance will be a little over 2.0 miles on a mostly flat dirt and rock trail. Strollers are not advised but smaller children can be carried in a child carrier backpack.
Who Is Invited:
This hike is intended for parents, grandparents or legal guardians with their children. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please.
This is a public program intended for families so if you are looking for an adult hike, there are several others listed on our website. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.
Where to Meet:
Meet in Parking Lot C at the Frontcountry Trailhead, near the restrooms. Open to the first 15 who check in at the Trailhead between 8:30 and 8:45 AM. The hike starts promptly at 9:00 AM. We will use the Savannah Loop Trail, which has a mixed dirt and rock surface.
How to Prepare:
Dress for hiking outdoors, in layers that can be added or removed as the weather changes. Sunscreen and hat recommended. Wear comfortable footwear appropriate for rough trails. Bring one liter of water PER PERSON and a snack.
Plan to arrive early as mornings can be very busy. The Natural Area’s front gates open at 7 AM; plan to check in and be ready to go no later than 8:45 AM. The hike starts promptly at 9 AM. First Day hikes are popular, and there is often a long line at the Fee Booth so please plan accordingly.
Though the activity is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. We often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass. Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot for you on the hike! The hike is limited to the first 15 participants to check-in with the hike leader.
If ADA assistance is required, please request modifications using this form, or email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.
Cancellation:
This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check trail conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or go to the GCSNA webpage, Instagram, or Facebook.
