First Day Hike: Trek to the Tracks

1:30p to 4:30p

Take a 5-mile guided hike to see the dinosaur tracks at Government Canyon.

It's hard to imagine, but our location was ocean-side property 100 million years ago. How do we know? Government Canyon is home to fossil tracks from two different dinosaurs, a sauropod and a theropod who left tracks along a muddy beach which is now preserved as rock. Take a hike to see the tracks and learn what we know about them so far.

Who Is Invited:

This hike is open to ages 10 and up. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please. Be aware that this hike includes some elevation gain and loss over rough, rocky topography. The hike to the tracks is 2.5 miles one-way, making a 5-mile round trip.

This is a public program intended for individuals or families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.

Where to Meet:

Meet at the Rainwater Tower outside the Visitor Center. Lots A & B will have the closest parking. The hike will leave promptly at 1 pm, so please plan to arrive a little early.

How to Prepare:

Though the activity is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. We often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass. Day passes can be reserved beginning one month before the date of your visit. Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot for you on the hike! The hike is limited to the first 15 participants to check-in with the hike leader.

Dress for hiking outdoors. Wear layers that can be taken on or off as the day's weather changes. Wear sturdy, well-broken-in hiking shoes or boots. Sunscreen and a hat are recommended. Bring at least 2 liters of water per person and a snack.

If ADA assistance is required, please request modifications using this form, or email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.

Cancellation:

This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check trail conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or go to the GCSNA webpage, Instagram, or Facebook.
