Rockin' Through Time

The landscape at Government Canyon is full of clues about the ancient past, if you know how to look.

Maybe you've wondered how old the ground you’re walking on is. Or have you ever thought about what created the hills at Government Canyon? Join a ranger to look at the different rock formations of Government Canyon, discover the diverse rocks we walk over every day, and learn about the faults that exist within the natural area. You'll gain a new way to look at our familiar landscape.

This hike will be approximately 4 miles and will go through some areas that have rough, rocky terrain and significant elevation change. Open to ages 10 and older. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. Hike will be in the backcountry where no pets are allowed.

Meet at the Backcountry Trailhead by 8:15 am. Dress for hiking outdoors; sturdy and comfortable hiking shoes, sunscreen, bug spray and a hat are recommended. Bring at least 3 liters of water per person and a snack.

Registration is NOT required for this hike. Though the hike is free, all Natural Area entrance fees apply. To save time at the Fee Booth on crowded days and ensure entrance, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass. Plan to arrive early in case there is a long line at the Fee Booth. 

This is a public program intended for individuals or families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.
