Grit and Grace: Women's History Hike

This October is Government Canyon's 20th Anniversary month. Let's kick off the celebration with a hike honoring the women whose efforts led to this land's preservation.

Learn the history of Government Canyon’s trailblazing women and hear stories about the positive impacts they made on the canyon. Hike distance will be approximately 5 miles over easy to moderate terrain.

Who is Invited:

Hike is open to anyone age 12 and older. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please.

This is a public program intended for individuals or families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.

Registration & Fees:

Program reservations are NOT required for this hike! The hike is limited to the first 15 participants to check-in with the hike leader.

Though the hike is free, all Natural Area entrance fees apply. The Natural Area’s front gates open at 7:00 AM and the hike begins promptly at 8:00 AM. Plan to arrive early as Saturdays can be very busy. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot for you on the hike!

When & Where to Meet:

Meet at the Amphitheater in Parking Lot C. Open to the first 15 who check in at the at the Amphitheater between 7:30 and 7:45 AM. The hike starts promptly at 8:00 AM.

What to Wear & Bring:

Dress for hiking outdoors. Comfortable shoes/boots, sunscreen, bug spray and a hat recommended. Wear layers that can be added or removed as weather conditions change. Bring at least 2 liters of water per person and snacks.
