Intro to Hiking for Women

Want to spend more time in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, but unsure how to begin? Come learn about hiking and Celebrate National Trails Day at a women’s beginners hiking clinic.

National Trails Day® is a nationally recognized trail awareness program that occurs annually on the first Saturday of June and inspires the public to discover, learn about, and celebrate trails while participating in outdoor activities, clinics, and trail stewardship projects.

Hiking is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the outdoors and provides a great source of relaxation and physical fitness. With a little planning and preparation, hiking is an activity that almost anyone can do! Absolutely ZERO experience required – in fact encouraged! We’ll spend approximately one hour learning the basics, providing suggestions for what to pack, and answering all of your questions. Afterwards, you’ll test your new skills on a short and easy hike (approximately 2 miles).

Who is Invited:

Open to women ages 12 and older; minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please.

This is a public program intended for women only. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.

Registration & Fees:

Registration is NOT required for this activity, but please arrive on time. Saturdays can be very busy, and there is often a long line at the Fee Booth.

Though the event is free, all Natural Area entrance fees apply. To save time at the Fee Booth and ensure entrance on crowded days, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass. Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot for you on the hike!

When & Where to Meet:

Park in Lot C, and meet at the Amphitheater. Open to the first 15 who check in at the Amphitheater between 7:30 and 7:45 AM. The program starts promptly at 8:00 AM.

How to Prepare:

Dress for hiking outdoors. Comfortable, broken-in, shoes/boots, sunscreen, bug spray and a hat recommended. Wear layers that can be added or removed as weather conditions change. Bring at least 2 liters of water per person and snacks.

Seating is on limestone blocks in an open-air Amphitheater. A blanket, towel, or stadium seat is suggested to make sitting more comfortable.

If ADA assistance is required, please request modifications using this form, or email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.

Cancellation:

This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or go to the GCSNA webpage, Instagram, or Facebook.
