Kids' Christmas Bird Count

9:00a to 11:00a

Join us for a kids’ version of the longest-running citizen science project in the United States.

Each year birders all over the United States participate in all-day bird counts from Dec. 14 to Jan. 5 in support of the Christmas Bird Count, contributing population data to a citizen science project that stretches over 120 years. Kids can be citizen ornithologists too!

A ranger will teach the basics of bird identification, share some helpful hints and tools, and lead a short, guided bird walk. All ages welcome. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets, please. We will provide a journal to record data and some binoculars to share but please bring binos if you have them.

Registration is NOT required. Though the activity is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. We often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass. Meet in the Amphitheater. Lot C will have the closest parking.

Dress for hiking outdoors, in layers that can be added or removed as the weather changes. Comfortable shoes, sunscreen and a hat are recommended. Bring at least 32 ounces of water per person.

This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check trail conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at (210) 688-9055, or go to the GCSNA webpage, Instagram, or Facebook.
