Make Your Own Yucca Fiber Twine

10:00a to 12:00p
Sat, November 22, 2025
Lisa Cole
(210) 688-9055, x2010

For thousands of years, humans have used the fibers within yucca leaves to create cordage for a variety of uses. Stop by and try it yourself!

What could yucca twine be used for? The list is long...ropes, nets, sandals, clothing, sleeping mats, and so much more. We'll try out a couple of techniques and learn together, but please know our Ranger is still learning too! We'll provide everything you need. In this case, yucca leaves and fibers are coming from private land courtesy of one of our rangers. Please don't collect leaves or any other objects in the protected space at Government Canyon.

Come and go any time during the event.

Who Is Invited:

This activity is stationary (no hike), and all ages are welcome. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or guardian. No pets please.

This is a public program intended for individuals or families rather than groups. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.

Where to Meet:

This activity will be in the Amphitheater, adjacent to Lot C. The parking lot and path to the amphitheater have a durable surface and are near an accessible restroom.

How to Prepare:

Registration is not required for this activity. Though the event is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. We often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass. There is often a line at the fee booth; arrive early to get to your activity on time. Day passes may be purchased up to one month in advance.

Dress for hiking outdoors, in layers that can be added or removed as the weather changes. Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, bug spray and a hat are recommended.

If ADA assistance is required, please request modifications using this form, or email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.

Cancellation:

This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or go to the GCSNA webpage, Instagram, or Facebook.
