Name That Tune: Birdsong Edition
Sat, February 01, 2025
Most avid birders eventually add sound identification to the tool set they use in identifying birds. But bird songs convey more information than just the identity of the singer.
Did you ever wish you could speak the language of the birds? Can the sounds they make really be considered a language? Learn more about the science behind bird songs, gather tips for improving your birding skill in this area, and play Birdsong Bingo with us to practice!
Who Is Invited:
This activity is stationary (no hike). While birders of all ages are welcome, the activity is best for ages 8 and up. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or guardian. No pets please.
This is a public program intended for individuals or families rather than groups. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.
Where to Meet:
This activity will be in the Gallery, the screened structure, near the Visitor Center. Lot A or B will be the closest parking. The parking lot and path to the Gallery are paved and near an accessible restroom.
How to Prepare:
Registration is not required for this activity. Though the event is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. We often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass. There is often a line at the fee booth; arrive early to get to your activity on time. Day passes may be purchased up to one month in advance.
Dress for hiking outdoors, in layers that can be added or removed as the weather changes. Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, bug spray and a hat are recommended.
If ADA assistance is required, please request modifications using this form, or email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.
Cancellation:
This program is somewhat weather-dependent and subject to cancellation if conditions are truly inclement. Check conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or go to the GCSNA webpage, Instagram, or Facebook.
