Night Crawlers

8:30p to 10:30p

Glow-in-the-dark scorpions, mysterious moths, and more...this night walk is just for invertebrate enthusiasts.

Do you ever find yourself stepping outside to take a closer look at the fascinating critters attracted to the light coming through your window on summer nights? If so, this is the walk for you!

This activity is open to ages 5 and up and includes both a short hike and time spent with experts at our light traps. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please. You may want to bring a blanket or portable chair to sit on. We'll start in the Group Picnic Pavilion. Lot A will have the closest parking. The parking lot and path to the pavilion are paved and near an accessible restroom. The Discovery Trail has a packed granite surface. We'll hike no more than one mile, and likely less.

Reservations required! Reserve your spot at the Friends of Government Canyon website. Registration opens on Saturday two weeks prior to the event and closes at noon the Thursday before the event.

Though the activity is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. We often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass. Please note: reserving a Day Pass is not the same as making a program reservation! The activity is limited to 30 pre-registered participants.

This is a public program intended for individuals or families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.

Dress for hiking outdoors. Comfortable shoes, insect repellent (ironic, right?) and a hat are recommended. Bring at least 1 liter of water per person.

If ADA assistance is required, please email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.

This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check trail conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or go to the GCSNA webpage, Instagram, or Facebook.
