Poetry Hike

Release your inner Wordsmith on a special, guided hike.

Spend a morning reading and composing poetry in nature while hiking Government Canyon State Natural Area. 8:30AM – 11:30AM. The event begins with a short discussion about and reading of poetry, and then continues on a hike, stopping and writing along the way. We'll be hiking the 1.24 Mile Discovery Trail.

Open to ages 14 and older; minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. No pets please. Dress for the weather; wear sturdy, comfortable shoes and bring a journal for writing. Bring a snack if you like, at least one (1) liter of water per person, and a towel or pad for sitting along the trail.

This special hike is limited to just 10 participants, so reservations are required.

Reserve your spot at http://friendsofgc.org/events/

Registration opens on Saturday two weeks prior to the event and closes at noon the Thursday before the event. Sorry, no group registrations.

The hike is free although Natural Area Entry fees do apply. To save time at the Fee Booth and ensure entrance on crowded days, please reserve your Day Pass by visiting https://texasstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/government-canyon-state-natural-area/r/deDetails.do?contractCode=TX&parkId=1200058

Plan to arrive early as Saturday mornings can be very busy. The Natural Area’s front gates open at 7AM and the hike begins promptly at 8:30AM. Meet at the rainwater harvesting tower at the Visitor Center no later than 8:15AM.

SPECIAL NOTE:

Reserving a Day Pass is not the same as making a program reservation!

This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation.
