Wildlife Trick or Treat

6:30p to 8:30p
Sat, October 26, 2024

Take a short, wooded hike to visit a series of trail stations where you'll learn about "spooky" wildlife including scorpions, bats, skunks and more. Bring your trick-or-treat gear!

No tricks, but plenty of treats as we learn the truth about some often-misunderstood creatures. Our "hike" will be less than 0.25-mile, and each trail station will have wildlife information, specimens to examine, and of course candy to receive. Costumes are welcomed, but not required. Please bring a flashlight or headlamp.

Visit the amphitheater at the end of your hike for hot cocoa, and if you'd like stick around for a Sounds of the Night program at 8:15 pm (see separate event listing).

Who Is Invited:

All ages welcome. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please.

This is a public program intended for families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule a guided hike at a different time.

Where to Meet:

This activity meets in the picnic area next to Parking Lot C. The hike starts in the nature playscape. Volunteers will be in place to help you find your way along the trail.

This trail is somewhat stroller friendly, but if you have a carrier it might be a better option. The trail surface is not compacted, and may be somewhat busy with other hikers.

How to Prepare:

Registration is NOT required for this activity, but entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. We often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day passDay passes can be reserved beginning one month before the date of your visit.

There is often a line at the fee booth; arrive early to get to your activity on time.

There will be some lighting on the trail, but please bring a flashlight or headlamp. Wear closed-toe shoes. Dress for hiking outdoors, in layers that can be added or removed as the weather changes.

If ADA assistance is required, please request modifications using this form, or email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.

Cancellation:

This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or go to the GCSNA webpage, Instagram, or Facebook.
