Winter Solstice Night Hike

6:00p to 8:00p
Sat, December 21, 2024
Lisa Cole
(210) 688-9055, x2010

Take a walk over fields and through the woods on a starry (fingers crossed), moonless night...the longest night of the year.

Knowledgeable guides will discuss the night sky, nocturnal wildlife, Government Canyon history, and more. The hike is approximately a one-mile round trip over fairly level terrain.

Who Is Invited:

This hike is open to all ages. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please.

This is a public program intended for individuals or families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.

Where to Meet:

Meet at the Rock Garden beside the Visitor Center. Please be in place and ready to go no later than 5:45 pm. The hike is limited to the first 30 people to check in with the hike leaders. Be ready to hike the Discovery Trail on your own if the hike fills to capacity before you arrive.

How to Prepare:

Registration is NOT required for this hike, but it is limited to the first 30 people to check in with the guides. Though the hike is free, all Natural Area entrance fees apply. Please arrive early. To save time at the Fee Booth on crowded days and ensure entrance, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass

Dress for hiking outdoors with layers that can be added if the night is chilly; comfortable shoes and a hat are recommended. Bring at least 1 liter of water per person.

If ADA assistance is required, please request modifications using this form, or email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.

Cancellation:

This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check trail conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at (210) 688-9055, or go to GCSNA’s website, Instagram, or Facebook page.
