Volunteer Day

Stephen Garmon

Do you want to help keep the park healthy? Join us for a morning of easy work!

Calling all park allies! The park has been invaded by plants that are not native and detrimental to other wildflowers, grasses, and wildlife. The invaders: Malta Star Thistle!

While it isn't really all that dramatic, the Malta Star Thistle is an invasive plant in Texas and we have some patches in areas of the park that should be easy to remove by hand! The hope is we can end the problem early, before they get too widespread.

Join our rangers and volunteers as we first show how to identify the plant, and then how to remove it by hand. From there we can split up to different areas of the park or focus all on one spot at a time.

  • Volunteers enter the park for free! If you would like to volunteer, please rsvp to Stephen.Garmon@tpwd.texas.gov so that we can have you on the list for that morning!
  • Dress so that you are comfortable the weather, but we recommend long pants and long sleeves since we'll be working with scratchy plants. Bring work gloves if you have some, but we will have some to loan as well.
  • Trash bags and buckets will be provided.
  • Meet at 9am at the Park Headquarters Parking lot.
  • After volunteering, you will be free to explore the park, take a swim, and go for a hike!
