Coastal Habitats

Geukensia demissa

Mussels anchor themselves in the salt marsh by burying tough fibers in the muddy bottom.

These two-shelled animals, or bivalves, are accustimed to extremes. They can survive in very cold to very hot temperatures as well as in almost-fresh to quite salty waters.
