Powers led efforts to involve physically challenged people in outdoor activities. He founded Turning P.O.I.N.T. (Paraplegics on Independent Nature Trips), an organization dedicated to making it possible for physically challenged people to enjoy outdoor activities. He serves on several fishing-related advisory boards.
