Open on specific days during Early Teal Season and South Zone Waterfowl Season and drawn hunts for alligator, feral hog and white-tailed deer.
General Access
The Mad Island WMA is only accessible through private property therefore is not accessible on a daily basis. It is located nine miles east of Collegeport on the central Texas coast and consists of fresh to brackish marsh. The Intracoastal Waterway forms the southern boundary of the Area.
Permits Required
Visitors 17 years of age or older must possess an Annual Public Hunting (APH) Permit or Limited Public Use (LPU) Permit.
Waterfowl Hunting
A lottery drawing will occur at 4:30 a.m. each day of a hunt to determine your position in line. Hunters arriving after 4:30 a.m. will be checked in as they arrive.
Hunters arriving before 4:30 a.m. the morning of the hunt will line up at the Mad Island gate at the end of CR 374 (Franzen Road). Staff will issue numbered tags down the line with the last tag being issued at 4:30 a.m. Check in begins at the Hunter Check-station following tag issuance. Tags will be randomly drawn to determine order of check in. Hunters sign in with tag number, name and hunt location.

All hunters are required to have the following:
- Valid Texas Hunting License
- Annual Public Hunting Permit (APH) (17 years of age and older)
- Federal Duck Stamp (16 years of age and older)
- State Migratory Game Bird Endorsement (17 years of age and older)
- Harvest Information Program (HIP) Certification
- Hunter Education Certification or Deferral, if born after September 2, 1971
- Federal Sandhill Crane Permit (if hunting Sandhill Cranes)
- Steel shot or approved non-toxic shot only
- Shotguns that are plugged or not capable of holding more than three shells
- All hunters must check out and exit area by noon
- All hunters must exit area immediately after leaving hunting area, no scouting
- Hunting groups may not exceed 5 individuals
- Only one lotto number is allowed per group, no combing groups after draw begins
- All hunters must hunt within 100 feet of their chosen hunt marker
- Pick up all dispensed shotgun hulls
- Legal shooting time is 30 minutes before sunrise
- Life jackets are required on all vessels
- Consumption of alcoholic beverages on the WMA is strictly prohibited
- Stay on designated roads — DO NOT DRIVE ON LEVEES
- Speed Limit is 25 MPH
