Herps of Texas: References for Amphibian Identification
Websites
- North American Amphibian Monitoring Program (NAAMP) — This was a USGS-led effort with states to systematically monitor amphibians using roadside surveys. This program closed at the conclusion of the 2015 season, however the link still provides great resources on amphibians.
- AmphibiaWeb — sponsored by UC-Berkeley, is an online system that allows free access to information on amphibian biology and conservation.
Field Guides
These are available in most book stores and nature stores. Most paperback costs range from $12 to $20.
- Amphibians and Reptiles of Texas with Keys, Taxonomic Synopses, Bibliography, and Distribution by J. Dixon. A more technical book, with distribution maps by county, but fewer illustrations. Published by Texas A&M Press.
- The Frogs and Toads of North America: A comprehensive Guide to Their Identification, Behavior, and Calls by Lang Elliott, Carl Gerhardt and Carlos Davidson. This book contains calls of most frogs and toads in North America with natural history information.
- Texas Amphibians: A Field Guide by Bob L. Tipton, Terry L. Hibbitts, Troy D. Hibbitts, Toby J. Hibbitts, and Travis J. Laduc. Published in 2012, this University of Texas Press book is an excellent reference to all amphibians in Texas.
- Texas Snakes: A Field Guide by James R. Dixon and John E. Werler. Published in 2005 by University of Texas Press this book covers every snake in Texas in detail.
- Texas Lizards: A Field Guide by Troy D. Hibbitts and Toby J. Hibbitts. This 2015 University of Texas Press book takes an in-depth look at all lizards and includes excellent photos and range maps.
- Texas Turtles & Crocodilians by Troy D. Hibbitts and Terry L. Hibbitts. Published in 2016 by University of Texas Press, this book is an up-to-date synopsis of this important group of reptiles.
