EDITORS NOTE: In this issue of TPWD News, we forsake our usual format for the most part and provide a summary of the top conservation stories of the year. Details about these topics can be found in the online news archive. Please note that TPWD will take its customary two-week annual hiatus from distributing weekly news during the coming holidays. Reminder: Active Duty National Guard Can Get Resident Hunting, Fishing Licenses

AUSTIN, Texas – In what’s shaping up to be the largest troop deployment since Vietnam, many from the National Guard are being deployed and if you have been called up and you’re not a resident of Texas, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department wants you to know that you and your dependents qualify for a resident hunting and or fishing license. Hunting season just began and if you need a break before shipping off, TPWD wants to help give you one.

Rainbow Trout To Star in Texas State Parks’ Family Fishing Celebration

AUSTIN, Texas — You won’t need a fishing license this winter to try your luck at hooking one of the thousands of rainbow trout being stocked in lakes and rivers at more than a dozen Texas state parks.

ATHENS, Texas—The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center has a collection of slightly used chicken bones, the remains of chicken leg quarters fed to Splash, the 121.5-pound world record blue catfish at the center.

TPW Commission Confirms Jasper Site for New Fish Hatchery

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission voted Nov. 3 to approve the Jasper County bid to host a new East Texas freshwater fish hatchery for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The commission vote completes the new hatchery site selection process, confirming a recommendation made last month by the private, nonprofit Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation.

TPWD Unveils Possible Changes to Regulations

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is looking to clarify the hunting regulations by standardizing seasons and simplifying rules relating to white-tailed deer and turkey.

Proposed Regulation Would Suspend Coastal Fishing

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is seeking TPW Commission authority to suspend fishing at designated places along the coast temporarily in the event of a freeze that could jeopardize the health of a fishery.

Red Drum Donated to TPWD and Are Being Stocked in Lakes

ATHENS, Texas — Texas anglers received an early holiday gift: 50,000 red drum, donated by the largest commercial red drum farm in Texas. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department stocked the 10-14-inch fish into lakes Victor Braunig, Calaveras, and Fairfield. *
