State Parks Recovering After Torrential Memorial Day Floods

AUSTIN— After flooding left more than 50 Texas state parks drenched over the Memorial Day weekend, communities and park staff statewide have banded together to clean up, restore, and reopen most of the damaged sites. Thanks to their efforts, only four parks remain closed; Cedar Hill State Park, Lake Somerville State Park (all units), Lake Whitney State Park, and Ray Roberts Lake State Park (all units).

Blanco State Park Opens Aug. 1

AUSTIN— Over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, more than 12 inches of rain led the Blanco River to crest at 40 feet, causing significant flooding and damage to Blanco State Park. After more than two months of closure for cleanup and repairs, the popular site is reopening portions of the park to visitors Saturday, Aug. 1.

TPWD Graduates 23 Texas Game Wardens and State Park Police Officers

AUSTIN— After seven months of training, the 59th Texas game warden cadet class graduated today, with a new twist. This year marks the first time game wardens and state park police officers trained and graduated together in the same cadet class.

New Fishing Pier Grand Opening Aug. 11 at Lake Corpus Christi State Park

Lake Corpus Christi State Park near Mathis will host a grand opening celebration to mark the completion of its new fishing pier project. Visitors are invited to try out the new pier for free from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 11.

Operational Changes to Improve Visitor Experience at Balmorhea State Park

AUSTIN – In response to recent concerns about traffic backups and the resulting safety issues that it presents for park visitors at Balmorhea State Park, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is implementing operational changes to better serve guests at the park, site of the world’s largest spring fed swimming pool.

State Parks Recovering from Recent Storms

AUSTIN— Torrential storms that have continued to hammer much of the state for more than a week now are leaving their mark on Texas’ State Park system. As of Wednesday, more than 50 state parks report some damage as a result of significant rainfall; about half those sites are currently either closed or partially closed to the public due to flooding.
