Action
Land Acquisition – Freestone County
Approximately 33 Acres at Richland Creek Wildlife Management Area
January 21, 2016

I.       Executive Summary:  Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has been offered approximately 33 acres of land as an addition to the Richland Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA).

II.          Discussion:  The property is typical of surrounding riparian habitat (bottomland hardwood and (scrub-shrub swamp) beneficial to deer, squirrel, turkey, waterfowl, woodcock, various wading birds, among many others.  The property is accessed through the existing WMA and is part of a 66-acres inholding within the WMA.

This land is unique because it is not only completely surrounded by a Wildlife Management Area, but is also completely surrounded by a critical water supply project for Tarrant Regional Water District.

Given its location, there will be no additional burden on existing staff to manage the property while providing perpetual public use and conservation of a significant area of ecologically valuable habitat. If approved for acquisition, the property would be purchased with donated funds.

III.    Recommendation:  The staff recommends the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:

“The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission authorizes the Executive Director to take all necessary steps to acquire approximately 33 acres in Nacogdoches County for addition to Richland Creek Wildlife Management Area.”
