Michael Warren – Obituary and Assessment Call

Michael Walker

Michael Don Warren, age 77, went to be with Jesus on July 28, 2022, in his home in Flower Mound, Texas. He was born March 8, 1945 in Pittsburg, Texas to Jim Bob Warren and Fern Ellen Warren.

After graduation from Athens High School, he began a lifetime of public service when he joined the United States Air Force as an aircraft maintenance specialist. His service took him to U-Tapao Thailand, during the Vietnam War. Once he was honorably discharged as a Sergeant from the Air Force, he returned to his hometown of Athens. While he held a variety of law enforcement positions throughout his career, from city police officer in Kaufman to deputy of water safety in Henderson County, and Henderson County Constable, Mike's favorite position was Texas Game Warden.

In August of 1972, Mike pursued his lifelong dream of being a Texas Game Warden. After completing the Texas Game Warden Academy, Mike's first duty station was Center, Texas. Upon completing his initial service time in Center, he was provided the opportunity to move back home to Athens and serve the citizens of Henderson County. He did so for the next 36 years. He served the State of Texas and citizens of Henderson County well as Officer Mike. Mike retired from the TPWD on December 31, 2002. While he enjoyed his profession, his real loves were his family and the Lord.

Mike met his future wife while on duty as that city police officer in Kaufman. One evening he pulled over Paula Jean Evans for a broken muffler. Once he arrived at her car window, he realized she was too cute to cite. He walked away with a date, and she drove away with a warning. Mike and Paula were married nine months later in February 1972, at her mother's house in Kaufman. Officer Mike was now a husband, and this was the start of a 50-year marriage of love, partnership, admiration and friendship. In June of 1975, Mike became a Dad, when Paula gave birth to their beautiful daughter, Micha Dawn. Mike's family continued to grow when Micha married TJ Clark in 1999. He warmly accepted TJ in the family, even though there is little doubt he was as opposite from Mike as you could get, except that they both loved Micha. In 2003, TJ and Micha welcomed Trinity. In 2016, Mike and Paula moved up to the DFW metroplex. Only love and self-sacrifice would compel a Pops to leave his beloved Athens to be closer to his family. It was after this move that the disease that eventually took his life started to emerge. His kids were grateful that he was close so that they could spend more time with him and help care for him. These were great years in returning some of the love that Pops had bestowed on them. Mike was proud to be the Husband of Paula, the Dad of Micha and the Pops to Trinity. He loved them well, and was a great Husband, Dad and Pops.

Mike found great joy in service to the Lord, attending Cayuga Drive and Dogwood Baptist Church for 30+ years, faithfully serving the congregation in a formal capacity as a Deacon and the informal capacity as breakfast chef and head fried fish cook. He invested countless hours in the Youth Group at Dogwood and loved driving through Mexico with Bubba Hayes to deliver supplies to Bobby Farley's ministry in Belize. That may sound easy but getting through Mexico without getting arrested while driving the unpaved roads are both difficult tasks, but Mike loved every minute of it. Dreaming with Bobby about the possibilities of agriculture in Belize was a highlight of his life.

He is survived by several family members he loved being with, cooking for, laughing with, loving well and maybe occasionally writing a ticket. His two brothers: Jim Bob Warren and Gary Wayne Warren; their spouses: Quita Warren and Toni Warren; Brother-in-Law: Coy Wayne Evans and his wife Darlene Evans; sister-in-law, Tamara Warren, Nieces and Nephews: Misty Warren, Trae Warren, Shelly Warren-Weiss, Kelly Warren, Quinn Glass, Coy Glen Evans, Rusty Evans, Renee Evans.
