Land Donation–Harris County
Sheldon Lake State Park
May 24, 2012
I. Executive Summary: Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has been offered a donation of approximately 2.5-acres of land in Harris County.
II. Discussion: TPWD has been offered a donation of an approximate 2.5-acre tract of land (Tract) adjacent to a portion of Sheldon Lake State Park.
A local church will develop a tract of land bordering the Park to include a new church complex. This development will require a storm water stilling basin and an area for discharge from the basin. This drainage will flow into a wetland area of the Park and will require a drainage easement from TPWD. This donation will be a buffer between the Park and the catch basin.
Years of diversion of water out of the Carpenters Bayou watershed have reduced flows into Sheldon Reservoir by more than 50 percent, starving the lake, especially during periods of low rainfall. With proper management, even flows from developed areas of the watershed can improve water quantity and quality for the lake and the park.
III. Recommendation: The staff recommends the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:
"The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission authorizes the Executive Director to take all necessary steps to accept an approximate 2.5 acre donation and grant a drainage easement at Sheldon Lake State Park.”
