Acquisition of Land - Aransas County
Approximately 1 Acre at Goose Island State Park
May 25, 2017
I. Executive Summary: Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) staff has negotiated the acquisition of approximately 1 acre of land along Park Road 13, from a willing seller.
II. Discussion: Goose Island State Park consist of 409 acres on St. Charles and Aransas bays. It is located 9 miles northeast of Rockport in Aransas County. The state acquired land for the park in 1931-1935 by deeds from private owners. The Civilian Conservation Corps constructed the earliest park facilities in the 1930s. The park is known for its exceptional bird watching, fishing and groves of wind-swept coastal live oaks, and is especially popular with Winter Texans.
It has long been a goal of the park to protect the aesthetics of the arrival experience and park entrance along Park Road 13. TPWD staff is in negotiations for a 1 acre tract along Park Road 13 to provide a buffer of protection against a future development.
III. Recommendation: The staff recommends the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:
“The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission authorizes the Executive Director to take all necessary steps to acquire approximately 1 acre in Aransas County for addition to Goose Island State Park.”
