Commission Agenda Item No. 14

Action
Acquisition of Land - Bastrop County
Approximately 20 Acres at Bastrop State Park
May 24, 2018

I.      Executive Summary: Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has the opportunity to acquire approximately 20 acres of land adjacent to Bastrop State Park from a willing seller.

II.     Discussion: Bastrop State Park consists of 6,600 acres in central Bastrop County and protects the Lost Pines Region of Texas. It is located 32 miles southeast of Austin. The state acquired the core of the park in 1933-1935 by deeds from private owners and the City of Bastrop. The Civilian Conservation Corps constructed the earliest park facilities in the 1930’s. Bastrop State Park is an extremely popular Central Texas destination for hiking, birding, and camping.

TPWD staff have reached an agreement, subject to Commission approval, for acquisition of a 20-acre tract of land wholly within the boundaries of the park.  Acquisition of this in-holding will provide additional recreational opportunities and protect critical wildlife habitat in Bastrop State Park.

III.   Recommendation: The staff recommends the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:

“The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission authorizes the Executive Director to take all necessary steps to acquire approximately 20 acres of land in Bastrop County for addition to Bastrop State Park.”
