Acquisition of Land – Goliad County
Approximately 40 Acres at Goliad State Park and State Historic Site
March 23, 2023

I.      Executive Summary:  Staff seeks to acquire approximately 40 acres of land adjacent to Goliad State Park and State Historic Site that are available for purchase from a willing seller. The additional acreage will enable expansion of recreational opportunities for the public and fill a gap between Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD)-owned properties.

II.     Discussion:  Goliad State Park and State Historic Site consists of approximately 276 acres near Goliad, Texas, and sits along the banks of the San Antonio River. In 1931, the Texas Legislature accepted the main park complex from the city and the county of Goliad, and in 1949, it transferred the complex to the State Parks Board to share with the public and protect the rich history of the area. Today, the park offers nature viewing, hiking, mountain biking, camping, and swimming, fishing, and paddling on the San Antonio River. The public can also visit several missions, battle sites, and historic sites within the park and the surrounding Goliad area. 

TPWD staff has an interest in the acquisition of approximately 40 acres of land to improve public access to the San Antonio River, allow future expansion of the recreational opportunities of the park, and preserve the historic value of the Goliad missions and battle sites.

III.   Recommendation:  The staff recommends the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:

“The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission authorizes the Executive Director to take all necessary steps to acquire approximately 40 acres adjacent to the Goliad State Park and State Historic Site in Goliad County.”
