Acquisition of Land – Brown County
Approximately 869 Acres at Lake Brownwood State Park
November 2, 2023

I.      Executive Summary: Acquiring properties adjacent to current state parks from willing sellers remains a priority for Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), with a goal to expand public lands for recreational opportunities for the citizens of Texas and visitors from across the world. TPWD staff has identified an approximately 860-acre tract located adjacent to Lake Brownwood State Park available for acquisition from a willing seller.

II.     Discussion: Lake Brownwood State Park consists of approximately 500 acres in north central Texas and was acquired from the Brown County Water Improvement District No. 1 in 1934. Today, the park offers recreational opportunities such as fishing, boating, camping, and hiking. In addition, several group halls built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the 1930s and 1940s are available as meeting venues to the general public.

TPWD staff has an interest in the acquisition of the approximately 860-acre tract to expand Lake Brownwood State Park, increase public access, and allow future expansion of the park’s recreational opportunities.

III.   Recommendation: Staff recommends that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:

“The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission authorizes the Executive Director to take all necessary steps to acquire approximately 869 acres of land in Brown County for addition to Lake Brownwood State Park.”
