Land Acquisition – Walker County – Approximately 1 Acre at Huntsville State Park
I. Executive Summary:
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) staff seeks approval to acquire an undeveloped 1-acre lot to improve access to Huntsville State Park for management by TPWD.
II. Discussion:
The 2,126-acre Huntsville State Park is located in Walker County, deep in the Southeast Texas Piney Woods. TPWD staff located a vacant 1-acre lot on the southwestern portion of the park available for purchase from a willing seller. Acquisition would improve staff access to remote areas of the park that are difficult to access, including the southern portion of Lake Raven. Improved access would also expand habitat management opportunities for TPWD.
III. Recommendation:
Staff recommends that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:
“The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission authorizes the Executive Director to take all necessary steps to acquire approximately 1 acre in Walker County adjacent to Huntsville State Park.”
