Join dedicated volunteers for an informative and FUN hike at Government Canyon SNA.
We're heading 2.5 miles (one-way) to the dinosaur tracks for this edition of our recurring Explore the Canyon hike! This hike is rocky and rough, and requires broken-in shoes with sturdy soles. While there isn't a big change in elevation, there are some ups and downs along the way. This is not an easy hike, so please plan ahead!
Who is Invited:
Hike is open to ages 10 and older. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. No pets please.
This is a public program intended for individuals or families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.
Registration & Fees:
Program reservations are NOT required for this hike! The hike is limited to the first 15 participants to check-in with the hike leader.
Though the hike is free, all Natural Area entrance fees apply. The Natural Area’s front gates open at 7:00 AM and the hike begins promptly at 8:00 AM. Plan to arrive early as Saturdays can be very busy. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass. Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot for you on the hike!
When & Where to Meet:
Meet at the Rock Garden beside the Visitor Center. Open to the first 15 who check in at the Rock Garden between 7:30 and 7:45 AM. The hike starts promptly at 8:00 AM.
How to Prepare:
Dress for hiking outdoors. Comfortable shoes/boots, sunscreen, bug spray and a hat recommended. Wear layers that can be added or removed as weather conditions change. Bring at least 2 liters of water per person and snacks.
