First Day Hike: Bluff Spurs
Thu, January 01, 2026
Celebrate the first day of the new year with an adventure on the Bluff Spurs Trail.
We'll hike to an amazing overlook where you can get a real sense of the canyon that is our namesake. This hike is approximately 4 miles in length over rocky, rugged terrain.
Who Is Invited:
Open to ages 10 and over; participants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. No pets please. Be aware that this hike includes a fair amount of elevation gain over rugged terrain.
Please note: The hike is open to the first 15 who check in at the Frontcountry Trailhead between 9:00 and 9:15 a.m.
Where to Meet:
Meet in Parking Lot C at the Frontcountry Trailhead. The hike starts promptly at 9:30 AM.
How to Prepare:
Dress for hiking outdoors, in layers that can be added or removed as the weather changes. Sunscreen and hat recommended. Wear sturdy footwear appropriate for rough trails. Bring two liters of water PER PERSON and a snack.
Plan to arrive early as mornings can be very busy. The Natural Area’s front gates open at 7 AM. First Day hikes are popular, and there is often a long line at the Fee Booth so please plan accordingly.
Though the activity is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. We often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass. Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot for you on the hike! The hike is limited to the first 15 participants to check-in with the hike leader.
If ADA assistance is required, please request modifications using this form, or email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.
Cancellation:
This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check trail conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or go to the GCSNA webpage, Instagram, or Facebook.
