Habitat Hike

Go “shopping” for wildlife habitat with a ranger at Government Canyon State Natural Area.

The diverse habitat at Government Canyon State Natural Area provides the food, water, and shelter needed by a wide variety of wildlife species. Join a ranger to search high and low for insects, fruit, good hiding places, and everything we need to find on our habitat shopping lists.

This short hike is about one-mile round trip and is best for families…or the young at heart! 

Who is Invited:

All ages welcome. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please.

This is a public program intended for families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.

Where to Meet:

Meet at the Rock Garden beside the Visitor’s Center. The hike will begin promptly at 9 am.  

Accessibility: 

This activity is somewhat wheelchair-friendly. Strollers are also welcome. There is a paved path leading from the parking lots to Visitor Center. There is an accessible restroom. We will take a short hike on the Discovery Trail, which has a crushed granite surface.

Registration & Fees:

Registration is NOT required for this activity, but please arrive on time. Saturdays can be very busy, and there is sometimes a long line at the Fee Booth.

Though the activity is free, all Natural Area entrance fees apply. To save time at the Fee Booth and ensure entrance on crowded days, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass. 

How to Prepare:

Dress for being outdoors. Comfortable shoes/boots, sunscreen, bug spray and a hat recommended. Bring at least 1 liter of water per person and snacks.
