Explore the lake and backwaters around Martin Dies, Jr State Park to learn all about local plants and animals.

Whether you are an experienced paddler or new to the hobby, come out and join us for a fun-filled day on the water with a volunteer guide. Introductions and instructions will be given at the start of the trip.

Bring your own paddle craft or rent one from the park (subject to availability).  Paddle craft rentals begin at park headquarters at 8:30am.  Plan on enough time to complete the rental agreement, pay rental fees and be at the launch before 10am.  During busy times, it is possible that all rentals will be taken. Please plan accordingly.

  • Where: Walnut Slough Day-use Area located in the Walnut Ridge unit.
  • When: 10 am -1pm

Note: The trip begins promptly at 10am.  The volunteer guide will not wait for stragglers.

  • Bring: Drinking water, sunscreen, appropriate attire
  • Cost: Guided trips are free, however park entrance fees still apply.
    • Entrance fees are $4/day per person ages 13 years old and older.  12 years old and younger are free.
  • Reminder: Keep in mind that even though these are guided trips, you participate at your own risk. If your paddle craft tips over, you must be able to get back in by yourself. You can choose to stay with the group or peel off and do your own trip if you wish. If you cannot keep up with the group and fall behind, you can continue at your own pace or return to the launch point.

This event is weather dependent.  Strong winds, thunderstorms, or hazardous lake conditions will result in a cancelled event.
