Tree and Leaf ID Hike

Discover the beautiful biodiversity the Pineywoods has to offer! Learn tree identification basics so you can be prepared to continue your tree ID journey after our hike.

On this guided hike, we'll learn all about the Pineywoods Ecoregion. We'll discover different leaf shapes and key identification characteristics. We'll explore unique bark types and other identifying factors. Leave this hike knowing where to start when trying to identify a new tree. 

When: 9am

Where: Meet at the Walnut Slough Day Use Area. We'll hike the Shelter Trail (about 0.5-0.75 miles going down and back)

Cost: Entrance to the park requires the purchase of a $4 day pass or a Texas State Park Pass. Children 12 and under are free.

Reminder: There are no restrooms at the trailhead. Plan accordingly. It is recommended to wear or bring insect repellent.
