Red Boring Sponge

Cliona lampa

The red boring sponge grows in a reddish mat over hard corals and rubble. It burrows its way into the coral, producing red-lined tunnels and eventually killing the coral. Instead of feeding on its coral host, the red boring sponge filters tiny particles of food from the water.
