Weather Closure Policy for Technical Climbing and Bouldering
All recreational activities at Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site are at the visitor’s risk.
A climbing and bouldering weather closure policy is necessary to reduce visitor injuries, encourage appropriate climbing and bouldering ethics, and minimize or prevent damage to the park’s resources.
After a significant precipitation event, park staff will impose a minimum 24-hour closure of climbing and bouldering activities. Amount and type of precipitation can extend this closure.
Closure information will be posted as an alert on the Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site’s webpage and as a story on the park’s official social media channels – currently Instagram and Facebook. You can also call the park to get information on activity closures: (915) 857-1135.
Climbing and bouldering activity closures are imposed when the park receives:
- 0.10 inches or more of rain.
- Snow events where precipitation is “sticking” to the rocks.
- Overnight freezing of precipitation.
Staff will determine if closures need to be extended based on weather and resource conditions.
Anyone participating in climbing and bouldering activities while a closure is in place will be asked to surrender their orientation card and leave the park.
