Action
Land Donation - Bexar County
Government Canyon State Natural Area
November 6, 2008
I. Executive Summary: An adjacent landowner would like to donate 2.6 acres of land to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) for addition to the Government Canyon State Natural Area (SNA) in Bexar County.
II. Discussion: Government Canyon SNA is an 8,622-acre facility just outside San Antonio. Most of the SNA lies within the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone, and facility development is minimal. Because of adjacent development, few opportunities exist to expand the area beyond its present boundaries.
The owner of an adjacent tract of undeveloped land desires to donate 2.6 acres to TPWD. This is the portion of his tract which lies within the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone. It could not be developed, but would increase the buffer between the recreational and conservation areas of the property and future adjacent development. Management of the donated land would require no further funding or staff effort.
III. Recommendation: The staff recommends the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:
"The Executive Director is authorized to take all necessary steps to accept the donation of 2.6 acres of land in Bexar County for addition to Government Canyon State Natural Area."
