Commission Agenda Item No. 11
Presenter: Corky Kuhlmann

Action
Land Acquisition—Anderson County
Gus Engeling Wildlife Management Area
August 22, 2013

  1. Executive Summary: Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has been offered approximately 118.5 acres of land as an addition to the Gus Engeling Wildlife Management Area (WMA).
  2. Discussion: TPWD staff has been contacted by a neighboring property owner who is willing to sell his property to TPWD. The property is 118.49 acres and borders the WMA on the southwestern boundary. The property shares .90 miles of common boundary with over half of that being surrounded on three sides by the WMA. The land consists of approximately 60% Post Oak Uplands, 40% Native Warm Season Grass fields, a small pond, and 2 seasonally intermittent springs. This habitat type is consistent with the upland habitat of the WMA. The addition of this property would enhance prescribed burning options by shoring up a boundary that was a previous cause for concern. This would better enable TPWD to utilize prescribed fire given prevailing weather conditions. This property will also provide additional public hunting opportunity to the WMA.
  3. Recommendation: The staff recommends the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:
“The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission authorizes the Executive Director to take all necessary steps to acquire approximately 118.49 acres in Anderson County for addition to the Gus Engeling Wildlife Management Area.”
