Action
Land Acquisition – Reeves County
Approximately 50 Acres at Balmorhea State Park
January 21, 2016

I.       Executive Summary: Texas Parks and Wildlife Department staff (TPWD) has negotiated a deal with Reeves County Water Improvement District #1 (RCWID) for the acquisition of approximately 50 acres tract of land (Tract) as an addition to the Balmorhea State Park (Park).

II.          Discussion: TPWD has negotiated a deal with RCWID to acquire 50 acres of land as an addition to the Park.  Acquisition of this Tract would more than double the size of the Park, but acquisition of said 50 acres tract is contingent on TPWD being able to acquire a small intervening tract.

There is currently no area of the Park that will accommodate further development.  Acquisition of this tract will add recreational value to the Park giving it room to expand.

III.    Recommendation:  The staff recommends the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:

“The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission authorizes the Executive Director to take all necessary steps to acquire approximately 50 acres in Reeves County for addition to Balmorhea State Park following acquisition of the intervening tract.”
