Local Park Grants Funding
Request Approval of Proposed Funding Recommendations
March 24, 2022

I.      Executive Summary: The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) staff is seeking approval of its local park grants funding recommendations. The federal Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) State and Local Assistance Program, the Texas Large County and Municipality Recreation and Parks Account (Urban Parks Account), and the Texas Recreation and Parks Account (TRPA) provide matching grants to local governments for the acquisition and development of public parkland and recreation facilities.

II.     Discussion: Urban Outdoor, Non-Urban Outdoor, and Small Community Recreation Grants are made available to local governments in Texas based on population for the acquisition and/or development of public parkland. Funds available include: $9,472,216 from the LWCF and $3,043,391 from the TRPA.

As of October 1, 2022, TPWD received 64 eligible applications requesting $29,054,088 in matching fund assistance. The staff is recommending support of projects in the amount of $12,515,607.

Exhibits A through C rank the projects in descending order based on each grant program’s scoring criteria, which were previously adopted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission.

III.   Recommendation: The staff recommends that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:

“Funding for projects listed in Exhibits A through C in the amount of $12,515,607 is approved.”
