Commission Meeting Agenda Item No. 12

Action
Acquisition of Land – Harrison County
Approximately 0.5 Acres at Caddo Lake State Park
May 26, 2022

I.      Executive Summary: Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) staff seeks to acquire approximately 0.5 acres adjacent to the Caddo Lake State Park (SP) entrance from a willing seller.

II.     Discussion:  Caddo Lake SP opened on July 4, 1934.  The approximate 460-acre park was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps.  The park is a popular destination for watching birds, paddling canoe trails through the cypress trees, and fishing for the more than 70 species of fish in Caddo Lake.

The subject tract would allow TPWD to protect the aesthetics of the park entrance.  Currently the subject tract contains a vacant convenience store.  TPWD staff would like to acquire the tract and remove all infrastructure from the property to restore it back to its natural state.

III.   Recommendation: The staff recommends the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:

“The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission authorizes the Executive Director to take all necessary steps to acquire approximately 0.5 acres of land for addition to Caddo Lake State Park in Harrison County.”
