Bobwhite and Scaled Quail in the South Texas Plains
Quail Forecast 2017-18

Summary

Much of south Texas had an average season last year with many above average hunts reported. Spring-summer nesting was reported across the region but field observations of broods were mixed. Weather conditions were variable across counties and many areas may have been too dry to support nesting and brooding activity during mid-summer. Late summer rains likely triggered some additional nesting activity that would not be detected by our survey. In parts of south Texas hunters may encounter late hatched young birds at the beginning of the season. Despite differences, there will likely be good hunting opportunities in areas of suitable habitat.

The average number of bobwhites observed per route was 10.2 compared to 14 last year. This is below the LTM of 17.2 and suggests a below average hunting season for the region as a whole. The Chaparral and Daughtrey Wildlife Management Areas provide public quail hunting opportunities.
