But if I put in a Wildscape, what about the snakes? rats? roaches?

Actually, a healthy habitat will discourage pest species. Native rodents that don't like to come into contact with human homes will compete with those house mice, Norway rats, and roof rats that love human homes, and will drive down their population. When we take out natural competitors and predators, we allow other species to increase to pest proportions. Re: snakes - keep brush piles, rock piles, etc. away from walkways, doorways, and play areas, and teach yourself and your children the easy characteristics to remember of the 4 types of venomous snakes in Texas (cottonmouth, rattlesnake, copperhead, and coral).
