2012 Lost Maples State Natural Area Foliage Color Change Report
November 27, 2012 Report: Fall has come to Lost Maples and the leaves on the trees are also falling. The small maples have some color but, as we write this, the wind is making the leaves fall off in great numbers. The red oaks are turning, giving some beautiful colors, and creating some stunning views, mixed with the yellows of the escarpment cherry trees and the lacy oaks. This is the final report for 2012. Thank you for all the support, and remember that this Natural Area is beautiful anytime of year, so come visit often, and see how the seasons change the scenery.
November 19, 2012 Report: We have come to the point that every time the wind blows, the leaves go to the ground. We still have some color but it is going fast. I see the Red Oaks and the Lacy Oaks starting to change. The drive along the Medina River, and the Sabinal River, has beautiful golden brown Sycamores, and copper colored Cypress trees, making the trip in this direction, extra beautiful. The Staff at Lost Maples appreciate your support in the form of the great amount of visitation we had the last two weeks. We are so grateful for the opportunity to share with each of you, this unique area of Texas. Come Back and see us again everyone.
November 12, 2012 Report: Lost Maples has had some good colors but not as bright as in the past. Last year with the drought the trees produced no seeds, this year we have a bumper crop of maple seeds. The colors are there, but not as bright as in the past because of the seed production. We have trees with leaves that are still green, or that have not completely turned. The weather has not been cold enough for some of the trees, but that is changed now with this cold front. The next couple of nights should get the trees to finish their fall color change and next weekend should have some really good color on the remaining trees.
We had approximately 1,800 cars total, this past Veteran’s Day Weekend, and want to thank all of you for your support, visitation and patience. Come back to see the rest of the colors this cold front will provide, and the Red Oaks starting to turn. The Hill Country is extra beautiful this time of year; come see our Hill Country parks and enjoy the drive in between.
November 5, 2012 Report: The maple trees are changing as we speak. The cold front last week really put them to work. We have color showing all over the park. The East Trail around Primitive A is beautiful on the side of the canyons. The trees near the pond are turning beautiful shades of red and orange. The majority of the trees are turning colors; my prediction is that by Veterans Day we will be at the peak of this year's color. The drive here is beautiful too, so come out and see us.
October 30, 2012 Report: The temperature here got into the mid 30’s and we were chilly. The good news is that the trees have just a tiny bit of color around the edges. We hope that by this next weekend we will have some trees in full color. That means, close to Veteran’s Day, the Maple trees hopefully will be in peak color. The weather is great out here so come hike the park, picnic, fish at the pond, or just come to enjoy the most unique park in the hill country. The scenery on the ride out here is stunning.
October 23, 2012 Report: Green is still the color of the vast majority of the foliage in the park. We have not yet had a real cold spell to make the trees change color. There are some trees with a hint of color, but Mother Nature, and the weathermen, are not helping at all. Hope is in the future though, with a forecast for cold weather this weekend. It is a great time to visit the park, with perfect weather for hiking.
October 15, 2012 Report: The park and staff are prepared for fall colors, now Mother Nature needs to provide us with some cold weather. The park canvas is ready to be painted for all to see. There are a hand full of trees that want to change with just a minimal amount of leaves turning on the East Trail, and on the way to the pond. The leaves with color, on each tree, could be counted on both hands. This is a positive sign for Mother Nature to get to work. The park is in great shape just awaiting the icy touch of the season to make beautiful colors. The sunsets, and the dawn, are beautiful from the top of the west trail. Come see for yourself and experience the beauty of Lost Maples. The colors, when they come, are an added bonus.
October 9, 2012 Report: Lost Maples is green and beautiful with healthy trees, and we just had some chilly weather that should help the trees give us some other colors. If we can get one or two more cold nights the trees should start to show their fall beauty. The weather is perfect for camping, hiking and picnicking. Come visit for some stunning scenery.
October 4, 2012 Report: The park is in excellent shape as always with the maples ready to make a show. We are hoping for some cool weather to get the trees motivated to brighten up our park. The only colors we have now are the Maximilian Sunflowers are in bloom giving us beautiful yellows. There are many beautiful spots for pictures and views in the area so “Come See Us!”
