Commission Agenda Item No. 8

Action
Acquisition of Land – Galveston County
Approximately 3.7 Acres at Galveston Island State Park
November 10, 2020

I.      Executive Summary: The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) staff has negotiated a contract to purchase approximately 3.7 acres surrounded by Galveston Island State Park (SP).

II.     Discussion: Galveston Island SP was established in 1969 with the acquisition of 1,921 acres straddling the island from its 1.6 miles of beachfront to its bayside bayous and marshes. It is a very popular destination for swimming, picnicking, birdwatching, and fishing.

In 2015, TPWD acquired 47 acres of undeveloped land on the east side of the SP separated from the SP by Stewart Road, also known as “13 Mile Road.” The property was acquired to mitigate nearby development. It surrounds a 3.7-acre lot fronting Stewart Road. Recently, the tract owner agreed to sell the 3.7 acres to TPWD, and a contract of sale has been negotiated contingent upon Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approval.

III.   Recommendation: The staff recommends the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:

"The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission authorizes the Executive Director to take all necessary steps to acquire approximately 3.7 acres of land at Galveston Island State Park in Galveston County."
