Commission Agenda Item 11

Acceptance of Donation of Land – Bastrop County - Approximately 49 Acres at Bastrop State Park

I. Executive Summary:

Staff recommends that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission (Commission) accept the donation of a 49-acre tract that is adjacent to Bastrop State Park. This tract would add excellent habitat and operational utility to the park and protect the park’s viewshed.

II. Discussion:

Bastrop State Park consists of approximately 7,700 acres in central Bastrop County and protects a significant example of the Lost Pines ecosystem of Texas. It is located 32 miles southeast of Austin. The state acquired the core of the park in 1933-1935 by deeds from private owners and the City of Bastrop, and the Civilian Conservation Corps constructed the earliest park facilities in the 1930s. Bastrop State Park is an extremely popular Central Texas destination for hiking, birding, and camping.

The owner of a tract of land adjacent to the south boundary of Bastrop State Park and totaling approximately 49 acres approached staff with the intent to donate the tract to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Acquisition of this property will fill in a gap in the park and join two recently acquired tracts together, adding some valuable habitat. This acquisition will also prevent future development and protect the park’s viewshed.

III. Recommendation:

Staff recommends that the Commission adopt the following motion:

“The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission accepts the donation of approximately 49 acres in Bastrop County adjacent to Bastrop State Park.”
