Acquisition of Land – Bastrop County – Approximately 43 Acres at Bastrop State Park

I. Executive Summary:

Staff requests authorization to pursue acquisition of a 43-acre tract that is adjacent to Bastrop State Park. This tract is available from willing seller and would add excellent habitat and operational utility to the park and protect the park’s viewshed.

II. Discussion:

Bastrop State Park consists of approximately 7,700 acres in central Bastrop County and protects a significant example of the Lost Pines ecosystem of Texas. It is located 32 miles southeast of Austin. The state acquired the core of the park in 1933-1935 by deeds from private owners and the City of Bastrop, and the Civilian Conservation Corps constructed the earliest park facilities in the 1930s. Bastrop State Park is an extremely popular Central Texas destination for hiking, birding, and camping.

Staff has identified a 43-acre tract adjacent to the south boundary of the park that is available from a willing seller. Acquisition of this tract would help protect the property from future development, conserve Houston Toad habitat, and allow for protection of the park’s viewshed.

III. Recommendation:

Staff recommends that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:

“The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission authorizes the Executive Director to take all necessary steps to acquire approximately 43 acres in Bastrop County adjacent to Bastrop State Park.”
