I Notice
Observation skills are a key component to good science learning, engaging critical thinking and inquiry. While we believe this activity is best when performed outdoors, natural objects could be brought into an indoor learning environment and accomplish similar outcomes.
To lead this simple activity, find a natural object or feature outdoors. Have learners make close observations and in a journal complete these ideas:
I notice...
I wonder...
It reminds me of...
These observations often lead to the generation of good questions and help the learner to become engaged with the natural world around them. Their curiosity is piqued, and their sense and experience of wonder is enhanced.
This idea of making connections is important because scientists have found that it is critical to learning and to recall. Learners who make connections with prior knowledge and memories find that memories (and recall) are more stable and accessible.
