The 26th Annual Birding Classic had a record-breaking year with teams birding all over the state from April 15-May 15, 2022.


    • 187 teams registered!

    • 1,100 participants statewide!

    There were great numbers of teams in several categories:

    • 46 Adult Big Day teams!
    • 12 Adult Regional Upper Coast Big Day teams!
    • 75 Big Sit teams (a tie with last year)!
    • 27 Sunrise to Noon teams!

    Several first-time teams participated this year. We look forward to seeing you again next year! Be sure to check out the Birding Classic Facebook page to see photos from the field during the tournament.

    It was also a super birdy year! Teams identified 425 total species, tying the record set in 2014. In total, teams tallied:

    • 8 species of hummingbirds
    • 6 species of nightjars
    • 36 species of shorebirds, plus another 18 species of gulls and terns!
    • 20 species of hawks and allies, plus 8 species of owls
    • 27 species of flycatchers
    • 29 species of sparrows, towhees, and allies
    • 12 species of vireos
    • 42 species of warblers

    This event was made possible by donations from event sponsors Toyota, the Texas Ornithological Society, Awards Ceremony sponsor Audubon Texas, and team registration fees and corporate and community team sponsorship. In 2022, $45,000 in Conservation Grants were made possible through Birding Classic funds raised.
