How can I identify an animal or plant? The best way to identify an unknown plant or animal is to consult an appropriate field guide. The guides are designed to be easy to use and have pictures against which you can compare your plant or animal. The field guide will also give you other interesting information, including the habitat the animal should be found in, its diet, some of its habits, and the state or area of the state in which it can be found. Almost any good library or bookstore should be well stocked with field guides. There are also numerous Internet web sites that can provide helpful information. A few we have found include:
- Herps of Texas: References for Amphibian Identification
- Texas A&M AgriLife Extension: City Bugs - Insects in the City
- Peterson Field Guides Featured Books for Birds
- Noble Research Institute Plants Image Gallery
- Texas A&M Aggie Horticulture Wildflowers In Bloom
- Texas A&M Forest Service Texas Tree Planting Guide
